Breaking Bad Season One & Chemistry lessons learnt

I just recently finished watching season one of Breaking Bad. It is a very good crime drama series produced by Vince Gilligan of X- Files fame. If you loved Big Bag Theory and the like; you will love this one too. But the best part of the series is that it has woven complex chemical concepts with a thrilling crime story and made it look so effortless.

You don’t need to be a science graduate to appreciate this TV series. The acting by all especially of Bryan Cranston who plays Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher and a scientist. After being diagnosed with lung cancer, turns to a life of crime, producing and selling methamphetamine in order to secure his family's financial future before he dies. For this he teams up with his former student, now a junkie, Jesse Pinkman played by Aaron Paul.

The unforgettable lessons in chemistry that I learnt/re-learnt from the Season One are as follows.
1)
Hydrofluoric Acid can dissolve anything from stone, ceramic, glass, metal, to a Human Body but, can be safely contained in a Plastic container. Walt and Jesse use it to dispose off a dead body but not before Jesse in his stupidity puts the Body and Acid in his bath tub which leads the entire floor to cave in.

2)
Mercury fulminate looks like crystal meth but is an explosive made by chemically tweaking mercury. When Jesse gets beaten up by Tuco the drug lord when he tries to set up up a distribution deal. Walt returns to blow up the whole place and bags the deal too. Also compensation for Jesse.

3)
Thermite is a powder like substance, non explosive but can create very high temperature while burning, up to 3000 degrees. Walt and Jesse use it melt the lock for breaking into a chemical facility to steal some chemicals. They need to step up production now that they are in business.

Season two has a lot of amazing stuff too. Just watched the first episode and learnt about Ricin a poison made from castor beans. Wait for my next post to know more awesome chemistry stuff learnt from Breaking Bad.
